Long-Term Vision 2030 (Excerpt)

While formulating

As a public interest foundation, the Foundation develops a wide range of projects in the fields of fine arts, photography, music, theater, dance, history, architecture, etc. and supports artistic and cultural activities through subsidies and other means for the benefit of society at large. Moreover, as a designated administrator of metropolitan cultural facilities, we operate facilities and implement projects in a way that makes use of the characteristics of each facility.
Furthermore, as we are policy coordinating organization of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, we are expected to play a role as an important partner in the cultural policies of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

Pandemic has created a major impact on society and the economy; hence, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has formulated the “Future Tokyo” Strategy and its cultural strategy, the “Tokyo Cultural Strategy 2030” for realizing “sustainable recovery” and a future Tokyo where the “growth” and “maturity,” both are compatible. In response to these strategies, we have formulated the “Long-Term Vision 2030 of the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture” to show the direction of foundations management in future.

As we look to the future, we will deliver art and culture to all kinds of people towards 2030, which is about 10 years away, and connect the past and the future, Tokyo and the world, and encourage new encounters using the power of art and culture. In this manner, we aim to enhance Tokyo’s attractiveness and make it a mature cultural city that attracts the world’s attention.

The entire foundation will work together to realize this vision. We look forward to your continued guidance and cooperation in the future.

1. Vision for 2030

Social conditions such as pandemics, the international situation, the hosting of the Tokyo 2020 Games, decreasing birthrate and aging population, progress in digital technology, and a growing awareness to solve common international problems, have changed drastically since the long-term vision was formulated in 2018.

Taking the changes in these social conditions into account, we have once again recognized the need to deliver art and culture4 without interruption, no matter what difficult situations occur in the future. In the Articles of Incorporation established by the Foundation, the purpose of the Foundation is to contribute to building a rich and highly creative local community. In order to achieve this goal, we will support the sustainability of the towns in Tokyo using the power of art and culture, and contribute to the realization of a common society that respects the diversity of people. For that, the following idea is defined as the vision of Tokyo and society that we aim to realize by 2030.

We will encourage new ideas through art and culture, support sustainable development of Tokyo and make the city open to the future.

Through the power of art and culture, we will enhance people’s imagination and realize a society in which everyone can appreciate each other’s differences and each person can be who they are.

  • We will connect the power of arts and culture to the community and society, and broaden its impact.

from these viewpoints, the basic policy for initiatives will be as follows.

Basic Policy

“Connecting” past to the present
